After winning the first two games in Kansas City, with each win wildly disparate, New York is targeting the Royals’ three-game sweep this afternoon. The Yankees, winners of eight consecutive games, are alone at the top of the American League East and have the best point differential in the junior circuit.
Luis Severino is tasked with containing the Royals today so the Bronx Bombers can hopefully get to Toronto with a series sweep and a nine-game winning streak. Coming out of rotation for the first time in years, Sevy has been exceptional so far in 2022. In his last outing, he threw much better than his last line indicated. The Orioles failed to put a runner on base before the fifth inning, and three of the four runs charged to Sevy came when Anthony Santander managed to push a change to the plate and throw it just over the left field wall. All told, Sevy still pitched six innings on the night and looked damn good doing it.
For the Royals, port slinger Daniel Lynch has the unenviable task of trying to suppress the Yankees formation. The 25-year-old sophomore pitched early for Kansas City, although in a limited sample size he was a little vulnerable on the long ball, giving up 1.7 HR/9. Lynch mostly offers a fastball at four seams that average 94 mph and a slider, delivering them 45% and 38% of the time, respectively. He mixes in a changeup (14% of his pitches) and the very rare curveball (2%).
After getting the day off yesterday, Aaron Judge returns to the Yankees roster. After a slow start to the season, he raked in the past two weeks, hitting a .309/.377/.691 batting line with six dingers. Joey Gallo is sitting outside today. After polishing his groin last night and leaving the game, it makes sense that Gallo would have an off day to rest. Anthony Rizzo will also take place with DJ LeMahieu in the lead.
A few Yankees have seen Lynch before and had some success. Most notably, Kyle Higashioka dragged Lynch deep on one of his two shots against the pitcher. And if ever any guy could use a dinger, it’s Higgy, whose glowing spring feels like ages ago. He is one of 33 US Leaguers with at least 45 AP who has yet to deepen in 2022 (new Ice Ranger Marcus Semien leads the pack at 93 AP).
Very well. Play today. Scan today. Let’s cross the border to Toronto on a nine-game winning streak and prepare for a tough streak with the pesky Blue Jays, who are just 1.5 games behind the Yankees in the AL East at the start of May.
