If you’re into fashion, celebrities, and all pop culture stuff, then Halston is fast becoming your new frenzy obsession.
The five-part Netflix series, which arrives Friday, is an brainchild of Ryan Murphy and explores the life and career of legendary fashion designer Halston.
But before you sit down in front of your TV with the popcorn, here’s everything you need to know about the creator and the show.
Who was Halston?
Born in Iowa in April 1932, Roy Halston Frowick, known as Halston, was an American fashion designer who gained international fame in the 1970s after making an impact as a milliner in the 1960s.
He was frequently photographed at Studio 54 with his friends Liza Minnelli, Bianca Jagger and Andy Warhol and these images helped make him a cultural icon.
He died of AIDS-related cancer in 1990 when he was only 57 years old.
Why should I care about him?
Halston is considered a pop culture icon. He’s created or influenced so many clothes and styles that we all still wear (although we buy them at Penneys while enjoying a celebrity lifestyle).
Before his disco and Studio 54 fever, he designed Jackie Kennedy’s hat for her husband’s presidential inauguration in 1961.
Has Halston designed anything that I know of (other than the hat)?
Halston was one of the first designers to create the now beloved unisex clothing. He reinvented the jumpsuit, the shirt dress and the classic caftan, leaving an indelible mark on fashion.
Overall, his clean, minimalist designs were a phenomenon in mid-1970s nightclubs and redefined American fashion.
He won four Coty Awards, including two for his hatmaking designs in 1962 and 1969 and two for his fashion designs in 1971 and 1972. In 1974, Halston was inducted into the Coty Hall of Fame.
So what’s making all the noise on this show?
Well, that’s the idea of ââproducer and writer Ryan Murphy who, let’s face it, has a good track record.
It also has a star cast including Ewan McGregor as the lead, Rory Culkin as Joel Schumacher, Krysta Rodriguez as Liza Minnelli (no pressure playing a legend) and Bill Pullman as David Mahoney.
But aside from all that, it’s the superb recreations of eras and fashions that we’re all passionate about. We’ve already gotten a taste of this in the released footage from the show.
If Murphy’s previous offerings are anything to go by, it’ll be a gloriously camp, fabulous and glamorous look at the life and work of the legendary designer.
Anything else I should know?
Apparently McGregor had never heard of Halston before he was chosen. He told The Hollywood Reporter, “Finding out that he was so famous in his day and that I had never heard of him before, that didn’t make a lot of sense to me.”
But after engaging with someone who had been trying to do the project for years, he said, âI could instantly tell from the photographs that I wanted to play it, I could just feel it. There’s something about the way you can see he’s standing, something behind his eyes. There is something so intriguing about him as a character. “
Is Halston a true story?
As the series depicts Halston’s life, the family of the late creator have struck before its release.
In a statement released Monday via PR Newswire, his family described it as “an inaccurate and fictitious account” and claimed they had not been consulted by the producers.
The statement added: “The Halston Archives remain the only definitive and complete source on the man and his legacy as a personally appointed custodian of his papers and private belongings.”
So where can I see Halston again?
It hit Netfilix at 8 a.m. on Friday, May 14.
