Trainers designed by the late fashion designer raise a record £18.7million at charity auction

Two hundred pairs of trainers created by late fashion designer Virgil Abloh have sold for a record $25m (£18.7m) at a charity auction.

The shoe was a collaboration between French fashion house Louis Vuitton, where he was artistic director, and Nike’s Air Force 1 project.

They are made of calfskin and adorned with the famous Louis Vuitton monogram.

Proceeds from the auction, which came in at more than eight times its overall high estimate of $3m (£2.2m), will go to Abloh’s scholarship fund.

The famous designer died in November at the age of 41 following a private battle with cancer.

Prior to his death, he had helped organize the auction at Sotheby’s in New York and the event was held in association with his family.

Sotheby’s said the sale set several new benchmarks – including the highest known public record for the most valuable sneaker and fashion auctions ever held.

The company said it was also the most valuable charity auction Sotheby’s had seen in nearly a decade.

Charles F Stewart, Managing Director of Sotheby’s, said: “Today’s record auction, which has seen an unprecedented global turnout, is testament to Virgil Abloh’s legacy as one of the artists and designers the most visionary of his generation whose influence and widespread impact are still palpable.

“Sotheby’s is honored to have partnered with Louis Vuitton and Nike in this special sale, which is now one of the most successful charity auctions ever held at Sotheby’s.”

Proceeds from the auction will be donated to Abloh’s Post-Modern Scholarship Fund, which he founded in July 2020 and offers scholarships to students of Black, African American and African descent.

Death of Virgil Abloh

Abloh, renowned for working with stars such as Kanye West and Victoria Beckham, made history as the first African American to lead luxury fashion house Louis Vuitton.

He was also the creative director of rapper West’s creative agency, Donda.

The Illinois-born designer’s death sparked an outpouring of tributes from fans and celebrity collaborators around the world.

Abloh was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer, cardiac angiosarcoma, in 2019.
