British fashion designer Matty Bovan wins 2021 International Woolmark Prize

British fashion designer Matty Bovan has won the 2021 International Woolmark Prize as well as the Karl Lagerfeld Prize for Innovation. Bovan joined fellow British designer Edward Crutchley – who won the double in 2019 – after a panel of industry heavyweights selected him as the winner at a special virtual event earlier this month .

The International Woolmark Prize celebrates fashion talents from around the world who showcase the beauty and versatility of Australian merino wool, event organizers said in a press release.

Praised for its technically advanced jacquard weaving designs, unique styling, intricate designs, advanced understanding of knitting and weaving techniques, strong color combinations and sustainable approach to local sourcing and production, responsiveness de Bovan and his conceptual approach to fashion impressed the judges.

“When I see your collection I see that things are moving forward and a real thirst to show people what they have never seen before and this is something that is really needed right now and so inspiring,” said said American fashion designer Thom Browne, who sat on the jury alongside Carine Roitfeld, Ib Kamara, Shaway Yeh, Sinéad Burke, Tasha Liu, Tim Blanks and Julie Davies.

Bovan’s Ode to the Sea is inspired by travel and escape – going through a traumatic event and coming out on the other side. Based in York, Bovan has worked with local suppliers and manufacturers, supporting local businesses, artisans and craftspeople through its tight supply chain network.

Using AW Hainsworth’s roll end fabric, screen printing and hand painting, Bovan breathed new life into discarded pieces of fabric. In-house limited series have turned dead tissue into limited commercial pieces, the statement said.

“It’s a huge honor to win these awards and I’m so excited to see where it takes me,” said Bovan. “I was already delighted with the platform and the experience of the Woolmark Prize. Being a part of the International Woolmark Prize has really helped elevate my brand and raise my awareness and knowledge of how I operate as a business and as a label. It was amazing and I loved every minute of it.
